UPGRADING? READ THIS FIRST! 17 Jul 02 issue Welcome to the latest version of SabrePoint. Be sure to routinely check our Web site www.sabrepoint.com for new releases and information. If you are an existing user of an earlier version of SabrePoint and you wish to upgrade to the latest version (as posted on our Web site) these notes apply. There are two means available to lift previous versions to the latest A) by downloading and installing the latest Full Version, or B) by using the WebUpdate facility on SP Utility. Most users will find the WebUpdate facility the easiest and quickest to use, but please read both topics below to see which is best for you. _____________________________________________________________________ A) UPGRADING USING LATEST FULL VERSION INSTALLER Typical Usage: Where a reinstallation required (after disk failure etc). Where your existing version was released before 19 Oct 01. In case of WebUpgrade failure. To avoid problems, the following procedure is highly recommended (reinstallation in current SabrePoint folder). This information is repeated in SPHelp.chm (the [F1] Help file included in your download) under the Upgrading topic. 1) TAKE BACKUP COPIES. Take a copy of all files within your folder and temporarily put them somewhere else on your hard drive for safekeeping. In addition to above, backup your data and settings files using your EXISTING SP Utility* - locate utility.exe* in your SabrePoint folder and run it. It is recommended that you tick all available boxes on SP Utility* and back up to any suitable media. 2) UNINSTALL EXISTING VERSION. Uninstall SabrePoint using the Windows Uninstall program (Start|Settings|Control Panel|Add/Remove Programs). If Uninstall asks whether or not to remove Shared files, it is recommended that these are NOT removed. Uninstall may report that some files could not be deleted - this is normal (the files remaining in your SabrePoint folder should be retained). 3) INSTALL NEW VERSION. Install the latest version of SabrePoint to your previous SabrePoint folder (typically C:\Program Files\SabrePoint). Follow the instructions - change the destination path if necessary. If at any time during the install process you are asked whether to replace existing system files with those being downloaded, it is recommended that you OVERWRITE your existing (older) files with the newer ones included in the SabrePoint download. After installation, you should be able to run the new version SabrePoint with its DUMMY data as shipped. 4) RESTORE YOUR OWN DATA. To overwrite the dummy data with your backed up data, run the LATEST version SP Utility (located in your SabrePoint folder) and RESTORE from your backup [see Step 1) above] to your SabrePoint folder. Remember to tick all boxes which were selected when you made the backup. 5) RUN SABREPOINT. After checking and adjusting settings as necessary (see below) you may wish to delete the temporary files copied to your hard drive - refer step 1) above. _______________________________________________________________________ B) UPGRADING TO LATEST VERSION USING WEBUPDATE Requires SP Utility V1.10.1 or later - can only be used if your existing SP Utility has a WebUpdate button. Typical Usage: Where your existing version was released 19 Oct 01 (V1.10.1) or later. If in any doubt or in case of WebUpdate failure, users should upgrade using the Full Version upgrade. Recommended Update Procedure: 1) TAKE BACKUP COPIES. 2) OPEN SP UTILITY. Note: If your version of SP Utility does not include a WebUpdate button, download the latest version from our Web site and install in your SabrePoint folder - overwrite your old version. 3) RUN WEBUPDATE. Connect to the Web and click the WebUpdate button. This copies essential files into a folder named WebUpdateBackup (within your SabrePoint folder) then downloads spupdate.exe file to your SabrePoint folder - approx 2 MB so may take several minutes. After download, follow the on-screen instructions to unzip files to your SabrePoint folder. Clicking OK on the remaining dialog restores your own data, languages and settings. SP Utility closes when the upgrade is complete. 4) RUN SABREPOINT. After checking and adjusting settings as necessary (see below) you may wish to delete the temporary files copied to your hard drive - refer step 1) above. In addition, optionally delete the WebUpdateBackup folder and spupdate.exe. _____________________________________________________________________ *SP Utility and utility.exe are named SP Backup and backup.exe in older versions. This file can be opened manually from within your SabrePoint folder; alternatively it auto-runs when SabrePoint is closed. NOTES: a) Later Versions If you currently use V9.1.3, V9.2, V0.x.x or V1.x.x then it should be that simple, but check/adjust all your settings after (particularly those in the Preferences windows). Your existing registration password should be retained, but if SabrePoint reverts to Trial mode (which may occur if you haven't followed the above steps) email us your new TryBuy Code Number and we'll send the password to you if within the free-upgrade period. b) Earlier Versions If you are running an earlier version (ie: released before 7 Jan 00) then additional adjustments may be needed - it is also likely that a new registration password will be needed - just email us with your new TryBuy Code Number and we'll send this to you if within the free-upgrade period. c) Versions released Jul 01 (V1.7.0) and later include an auto-backup feature which backs up all data and settings files each time SabrePoint is closed ... in the case of multi-user clients, the files saved are the server files (as determined by you under Preferences - Networking). The backed up files are written to the AutoBackup folder within your local SabrePoint folder and may be useful if you don't have a more recent backup elsewhere. To enable later restoration be sure you have a copy of your most recent files available before deleting the AutoBackup folder. d) You should not attempt to reuse any older-version database files, as new versions may have additional or changed fields. When the latest SP Utility restores your data and settings, these are transferred to the new database tables, which may be structured differently from the previous databases. NEVER mix old databases with new. Please email support@sabrepoint.com if you need help! End
